Infertility is becoming an increasingly common problem for couples in the United States. There are many reasons for infertility, and most of these can be treated. The causes for infertility fall in two general categories - those treated by surgery, and those treated by medication. Surgically treated causes include uterine fibroids, endometriosis, adhesions (scar tissue) around the fallopian tubes, uterus, or ovaries, and prior tubal ligation. Medical causes include polycystic ovarian syndrome, difficulties ovulating from other causes, low sperm count, and a wide variety of others. Greater than 90% of all couples who have been given the diagnosis of infertility eventually will conceive.
