Hysterectomy is a very commonly performed operation in the United States. Traditionally, there were two types of hysterectomies performed - abdominal hysterectomy and vaginal hysterectomy. Over the past several years, laparoscopic hysterectomy has evolved into the third method of hysterectomy, and has many benefits over the traditional types. The laparoscope magnifies the organs in the pelvis and allows for better visualization for treatment of conditions such as endometriosis during the surgery as well as diagnosis of other pathology. The benefits of a laparoscopic hysterectomy also include shorter recovery time, less postoperative pain, and better cosmetic results.
