Laparoscopy is the term used to describe the type of surgery where a small incision is made in the umbilicus and a camera is inserted. Instruments are then placed through additional small incisions elsewhere in the abdomen that allow the surgeon to perform the same operation that ten years ago would have required a major surgery with a midline incision.

The benefits of laparoscopic surgery include a much shorter recovery time (one week as opposed to six weeks), considerably less postoperative pain, and markedly smaller scars, providing better cosmetic results. Laparoscopic surgery has also been shown to produce fewer adhesions (scar tissue) than open surgery, which is important in prevention of postoperative pain as well as infertility.
